Held in Mexico City, the Innovation Seminar 2025 brought together leaders from government, industry, academia, and the legal community to examine innovation policies, public health challenges, international cooperation, and the evolving regulatory landscape of intellectual property in the region, in an event organized by Interpat and Galaxea Foundation.
With the support of regional academic and institutional partners, Galaxea Foundation and Interpat proudly organized the Innovation Seminar 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico, on October 28–29, 2025. Hosted at the historic Museo Casa del Risco, the seminar brought together leading voices from government, industry, academia, and the legal community to examine the role of intellectual property (IP) as a cornerstone of innovation, economic growth, and public health in Latin America. The event focused on architecting a pro-innovation ecosystem capable of responding to regional challenges while remaining aligned with global standards.
The seminar opened with welcoming remarks by Andrew Jenner, Director General of Interpat (UK), who emphasized the importance of international cooperation, regulatory predictability, and balanced IP policies in fostering sustainable innovation across emerging economies. His address set the tone for two days of in-depth discussions on policy, law, and technology.
The first sessions addressed the geopolitical and regulatory landscape of intellectual property in Latin America, exploring how global trends, trade dynamics, and domestic policy choices influence innovation environments in the region. Panelists discussed the need for coherent IP frameworks that can attract long-term investment while supporting national development objectives, particularly in IP-intensive sectors such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
A central discussion focused on compulsory licensing and public health, examining lessons learned from recent global health crises. Speakers analyzed how compulsory licensing mechanisms are applied in Latin America, the legal and economic implications of their use, and the importance of maintaining incentives for research and development. The panel highlighted the delicate balance between ensuring access to essential medicines and preserving innovation ecosystems capable of delivering future health solutions.
Another key session explored building a robust innovation ecosystem through collaboration, emphasizing the role of governments, universities, industry, and legal institutions. Discussions centered on policy coordination, education, and institutional strengthening as critical enablers of innovation. Participants underscored the value of dialogue between stakeholders to ensure that IP systems function as tools for development rather than barriers to progress.
On the second day, attention turned to international cooperation and emerging technologies. Updates on U.S. intellectual property programs and their relevance to Latin America provided insights into opportunities for regulatory alignment and technical collaboration.
A dedicated panel on artificial intelligence in research and development examined how AI is reshaping innovation processes, raising new questions related to inventorship, ownership, and the adaptability of existing IP frameworks.
The seminar concluded with a session on patent-related jurisprudence in Latin America, featuring judges and legal experts from across the region. The discussion highlighted recent judicial decisions, enforcement trends, and the judiciary’s role in providing legal certainty. Speakers emphasized that consistent and transparent judicial interpretation is essential for strengthening confidence in IP systems and encouraging innovation-driven investment.
The Innovation Seminar 2025 reaffirmed intellectual property as a strategic pillar for innovation and sustainable development in Latin America. Through open dialogue and regional collaboration, Interpat reinforced its commitment to promoting balanced IP policies, strengthening innovation ecosystems, and supporting economic and technological progress throughout the region.
